Swimming at Old Leake
Old Leake Primary Academy are committed to providing swimming lessons to all children in school to ensure our children leave school with exceptional water confidence, swimming skills and water safety knowledge.
We provide swimming lessons on site at school with the support of JB Sports Coaching and their Swim at School programme.
The pool is 10m by 5m, with a consistent depth of 1.2m and is delivered and installed by trained members of JB Sports. It is filled and heated on site to 30 degrees and chemically treated and filtered to ensure water quality. The pool is covered by a marquee. Changing rooms are also installed.
Swimming and water safety is part of the National Curriculum and all children should be able to swim at least 25m by the time they leave school. Children who cannot swim 25m are at risk of missing out on the fun and healthy benefits of swimming and endangering their lives by not being able to swim safely.
Children are grouped by ability within their class and have 2 x 30 minute lessons per week. Groups are a maximum of 12 children but most groups are smaller than this. There will be two instructors in the pool with the children at all times. Children in nursery are on a 1:1 ratio in the pool.
Children are assessed using the Learn to Swim framework.
Stage 1 | Develop basic safety awareness, movement and water confidence skills. Swimmers may use floatation aids and adults are not required to enter the water. |
Stage 2 | Develop safe entry into water including jumping, basic floating, travel and unaided rotation to regain upright positions. Floatation aids must not be used. |
Stage 3 | Builds on stage 2 and includes submersion and travel up to 10 metres on the front and back, whilst developing rotation skills and water knowledge. |
Stage 4 | Focus on developing and understanding buoyancy using a range of skills. Kicking techniques for all strokes will be developed along with swimming 10 metres to a standard as directed by the ASA. |
Stage 5 | Develop 'watermanship' through sculling and treading water skills, complete rotation and performing strokes to a standard as directed by the ASA. |
Stage 6 |
Develop effective swimming skills including coordinated breathing, developing water safety aspects and understanding of preparation for exercise. Self-rescue - Develop effect self-rescue skills such as floating , treading water. Understanding risks of water. |
